In Word, for instance, a Document is an object, while in Excel a Workbook is an object. You pretty much cannot work with anything that is not an object, even if it is not obvious that you are working with objects. Objects are really everything in Office. There are a few key characteristics to keep in mind when working with objects: Objects are the basis of how these programs work, and in some ways are like Russian dolls which contain other dolls, except you can contain multiple objects at each level.

It is worth a short digression here to consider the Object Model which underlies Microsoft Office (or, for that matter, LibreOffice).
